Women, Dressing For a Job Interview

Women Job Interview

First impressions count. Sure, there may be times when we wish that they didn't, but in the workplace, they always do. This means that your outward appearance cannot be overlooked for a job interview.

Remember that the interviewer is meeting you for the very first time. They are basing their entire opinion of you on the way you present yourself during the interview. If you look sloppy and your hair is a mess, then they may think that you are a disorganized person. Know the old saying, dress for the job you want? Listen to that important piece of advice! Take a minute and think about the kind of job you are applying for. Is it an office job? Do you hope to be working your way up in the company? If so, you need to remember to dress professionally at all times.

Keep in mind that it is better to be slightly overdressed for an interview than it is to be underdressed. At the end of the day, the way that you look at an interview can determine whether or not you get the job. So, be thoughtful and always look professional.

Women, here are some tips on what to wear and what not to wear to your job interview:

A pair of black pants or a pantsuit, paired with a simple button-down collared shirt never fails to look professional at an interview. An alternative to this interview staple is a sophisticated blazer, button-down blouse, and a skirt. If you choose to wear a skirt, it should be long enough that you can sit down without showing too much skin! If you wear pantyhose with your skirt, make sure that there are no runs in them.

Appropriate colour choices for an interview outfit include black, navy, dark grey, or even a dark purple. Try not to mix too many different colours together as it can look busy and unprofessional. Make sure that your clothing is ironed and free from stains. When it comes to your shoes, closed-toe heels are best. Aim for something conservative and neutral. Keep your hairstyle sleek and simple, and don't forget to make sure that your nails are neat and clean. Remember, you want to look as put together as possible!

It should go without saying that jeans are not appropriate to wear at a job interview. However, too many women think that jeans will be okay as long as they wear them with a smart button-down blouse or professional looking top. Think again! Jeans are far too casual for making that first impression.

If the interview outfit you've had hanging in your closet for the last few years doesn't fit you properly anymore, don't wear it. It will look far worse if you wear an ill-fitting top of skirt. Also try to avoid wearing too much makeup or perfume as it can make you appear unprofessional. Don't overload on jewellery either - keep it simple and elegant. Remember, this is the workplace, not the club!

When it comes down to it, use your best judgement. Think about how a professional business woman would dress and do the same. Don't ruin your chances of landing a great job by letting your clothes make a bad first impression.
